[2 December 2014] -- With Habitat III coming up in 2016, the Government of Ghana is actively facilitating the country’s participation in the process, with support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Cities Alliance. The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development commissioned a country report to assess development interventions in Ghana since Habitat II in 1996 and priority areas for Habitat III. Once completed, Ghana plans to submit the report to UN-Habitat to help shape the Habitat III discussion. The Ministry’s Urban Development Unit has compiled the report, overseen by a committee comprising a range of stakeholders from all aspects of urban development in Ghana – government ministries and agencies, local authorities, NGOs, community-based organisations and academic institutions. To ensure that the report was representative and inclusive, the Ministry held consultative workshops across the country for all stakeholders where they could discuss priorities, challenges and lessons learned. After completing an initial draft, the Ministry hosted a workshop 5 November in Accra to gather additional input from slum dwellers, the private sector, academia, civil society and international experts. This will be followed by a series of stakeholder validation workshops to give everyone a chance to comment on the report and participate in the process. The final report is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
