WBI Launches E-Learning Course on Street Addressing and the Management of Cities

 

Based on the publication by the same name, the objective of the course is to enhance local governments’ capacity to design, implement and manage effective and sustainable street addressing programs, and raise awareness of its importance for city management applications, such as resource mobilisation, land management, service delivery, and utility management.
 
Offering 30 hours of on-line instruction distributed over 6 weeks, the course requires a dedication of approximately 6 hours per week, and is open for global participants.

Street Addressing has a wide variety of important applications for city management, such as resource mobilisation, land management, service delivery, and utility management.  It facilitates the delivery of basic services such as emergency health, fire and police services, among others. More importantly, assigning individuals an identifiable location in the city provides both a physical and a symbolic connecting point for all citizens within the community. Street addressing thus creates a sense of civic identity.

 

 

A successful online pilot course was offered in English, from November 30 to December 23, 2009, facilitated by tutors and through interactive discussion fora.  The pilot group included participants from Gaza, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Albania, Mongolia, India, Pakistan, Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador and United States of America.
