Arua, Uganda: Integrating Urban Refugees into Urban Planning
The Arua City Initiative strengthens the structural and institutional mechanisms for reception, management and integration of refugees within the Arua Municipal Council. It includes collecting accurate data to inform planning; using municipal development forums to promote dialogue and build capacity among all stakeholders, and partnering with financial institutions to help migrants and host communities become more self-reliant and improve their livelihoods.
The project supported by Cities Alliance Global Programme on Cities and Migration was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented in partnership with AVSI Foundation, Arua Municipal Council, and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.
The video follows several people in the city, showing the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis, structural issues in the city that affect their lives, and how the programme of Cities Alliance and its partners helped to increase the strength of the Arua Municipal Council, gathered data on Arua's population and developed a sustainable livelihood model.
