Report No One Worse Off? Safeguards in Infrastructure
The Role of Environmental and Social Safeguards for Resilient Infrastructure Projects in Cities.
Safeguards are internationally recognised mitigation measures designed to significantly reduce or remove negative environmental and social impacts caused by development projects.
Cities Alliance in partnership with SECO and BMZ conducted this deep-dive study, to identify gaps and shortcomings in environmental and social safeguarding for infrastructure projects in the context of informality.
The study looks into the landscape of existing safeguards and illustrates how environmental and social impact assessments can help address informality in cities through the protection of livelihoods and the environment. The report also formulates key recommendations to increase the sustainability of infrastructure projects for the benefit of informal residents and the city as a whole.
