Monrovia: Tackling Climate Change Through Waste Management
As a coastal country, Liberia is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Its slum communities are among the most directly affected and deal daily with climate threats that threaten the loss of homes and businesses. In Monrovia, improper waste disposal is one of the reasons behind climate change effects, with many illegal dump sites that disperse methane gas into the environment.
This video shows how Cities Alliance is supporting Community-based Enterprises (CBEs) to help communities deal with waste management. The CBEs provide door-to-door services, collecting waste from communities and taking it to the transfer stations. Handling the waste at the community level is minimizing health risks and creating jobs for young people.
The Delivering Climate Resilient Solid Waste Management Services in Greater Monrovia through Community Based Enterprises project is funded by the European Union and implemented by Cities Alliance as part of the Liberia Country Programme.
