The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has launched a campaign to help cities and local governments around the world become resilient to disasters.

The 2010-2011 World Disaster Reduction Campaign “Making Cities Resilient” addresses issues of local governance and urban risk. It draws upon the experiences of previous UNISDR campaigns on safer schools and hospitals as well as on the sustainable urbanisation principles developed during the UN-HABITAT World Urban Campaign in Rio.

Mayors and their local governments have been identified as key targets as well as drivers of Making Cities Resilient. The overall aim of the campaign is to get as many local governments ready as possible through actions such as providing opportunities for capital investments through infrastructure upgrades and improvements, increasing overall energy efficiency and safety, urban renovation, and slum upgrading. The campaign aims to form a global network of fully engaged cities of different sizes, characteristics, risk profiles and locations.

The campaign will focus on raising political commitment to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation among local governments and mayors. It also hopes to mobilise all stakeholders towards disaster resilient cities through high profile media and public awareness activities and capacity development.
