The Cities Alliance will participate in the Fifth session of Africities to be held in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 16-20 December 2009.
The central theme of this year’s summit is "African regional and local governments' response to the global crisis: promoting sustainable local development and employment." About 5000 participants are expected to attend this year’s event.
Africities is a global event held every three years alternately in different regions of Africa. It reflects on the place and role of local governments in the governance and development of African countries. The main goal of the Marrakesh summit is to present proposals supported by the African regional and local governments that would help overcome the multidimensional effects of the present world crisis.
The Cities Alliance and ISTED will host a joint strategic urban planning session by the Cities Alliance and ISTED titled Guiding urbanisation in Africa for economic development and poverty reduction. This dynamic session will explore where African cities are in terms of strategic urban planning and assess the key challenges faced by them.
An international exhibition of African Regional and Local Governments, Citexpo, will also take place parallel to the summit.
The official closing ceremony of Africities will be on 20 December 2009 followed by a gala dinner. Prizes and awards will be presented at the ceremony to governments, institutions, and individuals making outstanding contributions towards sustainable development and urbanisation of African cities.
