Informal settlements and their residents are integral to the cities and economies of which they are part and there is an increasing need for inclusive approaches to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

This session will welcome Julian Baskin from Cities Alliance and Mohammed Zanna and Farouk Braimah from Slum Dwellers International (Nigeria and Ghana) to share about “Inclusive approaches for tackling COVID-19 in informal settlements”.

Julian Baskin will present Cities Alliance current COVID-19 response in Liberia and the lessons learned from the Ebola outbreak.

The event will focus on suitable approaches to managing and responding to the pandemic in the global South and how cities in their response to COVID-19 can protect their most poor and vulnerable by responding in a more inclusive and locally appropriate way. This session will also help cities who are thinking about long term recovery and how to manage future disease outbreaks in dense informal settlements.

Coronavirus Speaker Series: Sharing Knowledge to Respond with Resilience is a weekly session organized by the Global Resilient Cities Network (GRCN) and World Bank as a knowledge sharing session for cities in responding to the rapidly evolving Covid-19 situation. For access to the previous sessions’ shareable materials, please see this page that is being updated regularly.
