6 May 2010: Announcement on the Launch of the National Urban Forum in Uganda
06 May 2010
Dear Members of the Consultative Group, Colleagues and Partners,
I wanted to bring to your attention the attached announcement, which is running in the Ugandan media, on today's launch of the Uganda National Urban Forum, issued by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development. I encourage you to read the Rationale for the establishment of the Forum, which makes clear the significance of this event for Uganda and, indeed, for other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Uganda is currently one of the least urbanised countries in Africa and, with this kind of forward-looking initiative, at least has the potential to avoid the worst pitfalls traditionally associated with rapid urbanisation.
The theme of the Forum is `Sustainable Urbanisation: A Collective Responsibility`,
Very briefly, the Forum is designed to
- Provide a national platform for dialogue amongst all stakeholders of the urban sector to participate in the planning and management of urban growth;
- Increase awareness about urbanisation;
- Promote coordination amongst local, national and international partners;
-
Promote integrated participator planning, development and management of the natural and built environment amongst urban actors in urban areas; and
-
Influence legal reforms and inform policy direction on matters relating to the urban sector, and to promote prioritisation of urban development.
With my best wishes,
William Cobbett
