[9 September 2015] – Cities Alliance, in partnership with the African Centre for Cities, launches a new think tank on city-related issues in Africa on 10 September 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Africa Think Tank will generate compelling analysis and arguments to better address the key challenges and gaps of urban development in Africa, and will be a resource through which Cities Alliance can review the impact of its existing portfolio of work in the African context and within the framework of its Africa Strategy. The think tank will also address gender equality in city development.
The Cities Alliance is pleased to welcome think tank experts:
-- Yemi Cardoso, Chairman of Citibank, Nigeria;
-- Dr. Fantu Cheru, Senior Researcher at the African Studies Centre in the Netherlands;
-- Mohamed Halfani, former Head of Research at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi;
-- Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, Secretary General of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa;
-- Alcinda Honwana, member of the Editoral Boards of the Journal of the International African Institute, the African Sociological Review and the Journal for Higher Education in Africa;
-- Trevor Manuel, former Cabinet Minister for South Africa;
-- Gustave Massiah, President of the Strategic Support Group of Africities;
-- Fébé Potgieter-Gqubule, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Bureau of the Chairperson for the African Union Commission;
-- Clare Short, Cities Alliance Senior Policy Advisor; Kadiatou Sy, former minister of Town Planning in Mali; and
-- Jane Weru, member of the Kenyan National Task Force for the preparation of a Community Land Bill and an Evictions and Resettlement Bill.
The agenda for this first meeting of the Cities Alliance Africa Think Tank includes developing a plan of action and a communication strategy based on two key documents: ‘Urbanisation and its challenges in the African context’ and a ‘Stakeholder analysis’.

The African Centre for Cities is an interdisciplinary research institute based within the University of Cape Town that facilitates critical urban research and policy discourse for the promotion of vibrant, democratic and sustainable urban development in the global South, from an African perspective. The African Centre for Cities conducts a series of applied research programmes at local, national, African and global level.
