Grant Awards: Innovative Climate Change Adaptation Projects in Africa and Asia
Five innovative initiatives from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Somalia, Kenya, and Uganda are the recipients of Cities Alliance 2020 Innovation Call for Proposals on climate change adaptation.
The call, Stronger Partnerships: Local Innovations for New Climate Realities in Cities, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, awards small grants to advance affordable, accessible, and innovative climate adaptation projects at the community level.
The initiative seeks to foster dialogue and engagement between communities and local governments, with focus on residents of informal settlements, who are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and face the added pressures of social and economic inequalities.
Cities Alliance received more than 200 proposals from community-based organizations, national and local NGOs, from the Greater Horn of Africa and the Bay of Bengal, two regions particularly affected by the impact of global warming.
The selected projects offer bold ideas and fresh perspectives to tackle the challenges of a changing climate, using both new technologies, and traditional tools, from digital storytelling and mobile mapping, to tree planting.
They will allow the participation of indigenous communities, women-headed households, youth volunteers, city authorities and other urban actors, to strengthen resilience and adaptation mechanisms for urban poor communities in some of the most vulnerable regions of the world.
The five grant recipients are:
· Community-led heat mitigation, Women for the World, Yangon, Myanmar.
· Future Yetu (Our Future), Hope Raisers Youth Group, Korogocho – Nairobi, Kenya.
· Building and Strengthening Community Capacities in Inclusive Community Based Disaster Risk Management to increase resilience to Climate Change induced shocks, Action for Women and Children Concern (AWCC), Lower Shabelle region, Somalia.
· Climate resilience plans development with digital maps in Bay of Bengal’s cities, Badabon Sangho, Patuakhali and Bagerhat, Bangladesh.
· Waste management for flood control in Bwaise, Tree Adoption Uganda, Kampala, Uganda.
The call is implemented within the frame of Cities Alliance Climate Change, Resilience and Informality in Cities project, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the SwissState Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
