[29 October 2014] --On 31 October, cities and countries around the world will mark the first ever World Cities Day. Created by UN-Habitat to raise awareness of the role cities play globally, World Cities Day promotes the international community’s interest in global urbanisation. It also aims to push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and challenges in urbanisation, and contributes to urban sustainable development around the world. The theme of the first World Cities Day is “Leading Urban Transformations”. On the way to Habitat III, the theme offers the opportunity to redefine the urban paradigm for future generations. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN-Habitat Executive Director Dr. Joan Clos have already issued statements on World Cities Day. Both highlight the importance of this year’s World Cities Day on the way to the Habitat III conference in 2016. #CitiesDay Advocacy There are already many advocacy and outreach activities taking place around World Cities Day.
