UN-HABITAT Executive-Director Anna Tibaijuka and Angolan Vice Minister for External Affairs George Rebelo Chicoty signed a five-year agreement in Luanda March 11.
The office will work with regional and international organizations, regional and national governments, local authorities, civil institutions and the private sector to implement UN-HABITAT’s agenda in Angola.
It will also raise funds to formulate and implement activities and programs in Angola. The Angolan government has already pledged the first $680,000.
The agreement was the result of discussions between Tibaijuka and Angolan officials that began in October 2008, when she visited Luanda for World Day celebrations. During the discussions, the Angolan government expressed a particular interest in UN-HABITAT support for housing and land reform.
A founding member of the Cities Alliance, UN-HABITAT is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.
