A new Portuguese-language publication launched in December highlights the successful partnership on technical cooperation projects between the Cities Alliance and the Municipality of São Paulo, Brazil.
The new publication, Habitação de interesse social em São Paulo: desafios e novos instrumentos de gestão, covers the second phase of the partnership, between 2005 and 2008.
Task managed by World Bank Senior Urban Specialist, Ivo Imparato, this part of the project established a set of management tools to facilitate the continuation of strategic planning on municipal housing.
Some 200 people attended the December 16, 2008 event, which was held at the São Paulo Mayor's Office. Cities Alliance was represented by Programme Manager, William Cobbett and Brazil Project Manager, Giorgio Romano Schutte.
In remarks at the launch, World Bank Institute Senior Urban Specialist, Andre Herzog outlined the global significance of the project. For his part, Cobbett stressed the positive impact of the Cities Alliance-São Paulo partnership over the past eight years and highlighted the importance of a continued commitment to slum upgrading.
Two additional publications were also launched at the event: a Portuguese translation of the Cities Alliance book, Slum Upgrading Up Close: Experiences of Six Cities, and a publication prepared by the Municipality of São Paulo on Habisp, an information system to map housing in the city that was supported by Cities Alliance.
Cities Alliance has been working on technical cooperation projects with the São Paulo Municipal Department of Housing since 2001. The first phase of the partnership, from 2001 to 2004, is outlined in a publication titled, Integrating the Poor: Urban Upgrading and Land Tenure Regularisation in the City of São Paulo.
