[7 January 2011] -- The German Government has merged its three technical cooperation agencies – the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), the Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst (DED) and Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung (InWEnt) – into a single agency.
 
The new Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (German Agency for International Cooperation, or GIZ) became operational effective 1 January 2011.
 
It consolidates the expertise of all three agencies to better support the German Government in achieving its objectives in international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ is also active in international education work.
 
Based in Bonn and Eschborn, GIZ is active in over 130 countries worldwide.
