The World Bank launched a new Urban and Local Government Strategy in Singapore 11 November. The strategy calls for a broader-based, scaled up approach to urban poverty and seeks to help governments at all levels make cities more equitable, efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly.

Ethiopia has established its first-ever Cities Network to provide Ethiopian cities with a forum for exchanging experiences on strategic urban planning and sustainable governance. The country has also designated 23 October as "Ethiopian Cities Day," an annual event to reflect on urban issues.

On 26 September 2009, Typhoon Ketsana made landfall in the Philippines, killing more than 300 people and destroying over 10,000 homes. One organisation that has actively responded to the needs of the urban poor in the aftermath of Ketsana is the Homeless People’s Federation Philippines Inc.

The Cities Alliance, USAID and the World Bank are pleased to present The Places We Live, an interactive multimedia exhibit on life in the slums by photographer Jonas Bendiksen. The exhibit is showing at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. from 17 September, 2009 to 15 January, 2010.
