In the spirit of the new Cities Alliance partnership model, UN-HABITAT has invited United Cities and Local Governments-Africa (UCLGA) to jointly produce the next edition of the State of African Cities Report, due to be released in 2012.
The involvement of UCLGA – the umbrella organisation and united representative of local governments in Africa – will bring a valuable local government perspective to the report, which is part of UN-HABITAT’s flagship State of the World’s Cities series.
First published in 2008, the State of African Cities Report series has established itself as a premier platform for debate on urban issues within Africa. The inaugural edition provided a general overview of housing and urban management issues, while the 2010 edition covered governance, inequity and urban land markets.
The 2012 State of African Cities Report will focus on urban vulnerabilities, adaptation and resilience. Specifically, it will address the multiple risks associated with rapidly growing urban populations, including political, environmental, social and economic risks. It will also analyse how African urban resilience and adaptation can be harnessed for improved medium- and longer-term strategies and approaches at the national, regional and local level.
Cities Alliance is providing $75,000 for the preparation of the State of African Cities Report 2012. The activity will be implemented by UN-HABITAT and UCLGA.
Representing nearly 350 million citizens, UCLGA encompasses 40 national associations of local government from all regions of Africa as well as over 2,000 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants each.
