New Partnership: Cities Alliance to Support SDI Affiliates’ Covid19 Response

Cities Alliance has recently launched a new programme to support the global efforts in the fight against Covid-19, with the generous support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida. The initiative aims at strengthening the capacities of communities in informal settlements to respond to the crisis and enhance their resilience to future shocks.

The main component of the project is a partnership with Slum Dwellers International – SDI, to provide its affiliates in 19 countries with exclusive funding. This will allow the local federations of urban poor within the SDI network to ensure the continuity of their Covid-19 response activities in the settlements, while also working on longer-term solutions to address the challenges of slum dwellers.

The initiative will provide financial support to SDI affiliates in Benin, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Brazil, India and Philippines.

Cities Alliance will directly implement additional emergency response activities in Bangladesh, Guatemala, Liberia, and Uganda. These will include the distribution of personal protective equipment and hygiene materials, the provision of water and sanitation facilities and the delivery of community awareness and outreach campaigns in slums, together with advocacy, learning and knowledge exchange at regional and global level, while also engaging with Cities Alliance members.
