The World Urban Campaign (WUC), a major initiative by UN-HABITAT was launched at the conclusion of the fifth World Urban Forum in Rio de Janeiro. The Campaign is a global advocacy initiative to form a network of partners from public, private and social sectors working together to share information and best practices to achieve resilient, sustainable urban communities worldwide.
WUC provides the necessary environment for collaborative effort at sustainable urbanisation by all parties in the urban world, from individuals to organisations of the urban poor, local authorities, business forums, youth associations, media outlets, professional associations, women’s groups, ministerial conferences, and inter-governmental bodies.
Two major building blocks of WUC were also launched during WUF 5. The first was the 100 Cities Initiative which aims to share innovative urban practices by encouraging and mobilising people, communities, municipal officials, service providers and political leaders of any city to tell their story about how they are contributing to a better and more sustainable city.
The second was the World Urban Campaign Video, a seven minute clip featuring footage filmed in cities and communities across the globe (India, Tanzania, Singapore, Washington DC, New York, Lyon, Geneva, Madrid, Bangkok, São Paulo).
The Cities Alliance provided preliminary funding support for the launch of WUC. A number of partner organisations in the urban community also pledged their support for the campaign when it was announced.
