Legacy Programmes

In addition to its active Country Programmes, Cities Alliance has undertaken Country Programmes in:

 Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mozambique and Vietnam

Burkina Faso

The first Cities Alliance Country Programme in francophone Africa, the Burkina Faso programme:

> Supported the government of Burkina Faso’s efforts to implement national housing and urban development strategies

> Built the capacity of cities to strategically manage urbanisation

> Empowered and strengthened community organisations to actively engage in city development and national policy debate

> Focused on primary cities (Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso) and secondary cities (Dori, Dedougou, and Tenkodogo)

From 2012-17, the Country Programme mobilised more than 15 partners for over 5 grants with US $2.6 million in funding.

Ghana

The programme supported national and local governments working directly with urban poor communities to:

> Empower the urban poor to participate in planning; 

> Improve residents’ access to basic services; 

> Build capacity to better coordinate urban development efforts across the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA); and

> Support national policy making around urban. 

From 2011-16, the Country Programme mobilised over 16 partners for 9 grants (and 3 supporting activities) in GAMA with US $3.8 million in funding.

Mozambique

The Mozambique Country Programme worked supported national and local governments working directly with urban poor communities to:

> Enhance coordination and political willingness to address urban development needs;

> Strengthen the capacity of cities to provide improved services to the urban poor;

> Develop mechanisms to engage citizens in urban governance; and 

> Develop and implement local inclusive strategies and plans. 

From 2010-16, the Country Programme mobilised more than 16 partners for over 7 grants with US $2.5 million in funding.

Vietnam

The Cities Alliance Country Programme provided technical assistance and policy advice to the national government, municipalities and communities to:

> Increase active citizenship; 

> Improve access for the urban poor to municipal services; and 

> Support the development of effective policies for managing urban growth. 

From 2010-16, the Country Programme mobilised over 10 partners for 6 grants (plus support for the Vietnam Urban Forum) with US $3.37 million in funding.
