This Cities Alliance knowledge product highlights the key messages of the global study on secondary cities, which is expected to be published in September 2014.

It argues that a balanced system of cities with strong secondary cities offers tremendous potential for regional and national economic development, and offers recommendations for creating such a network:  decentralisation, national urban policies, greater competition among cities, and the development of latent capital.
