The City Statute of Brazil: A Commentary

Brazil has responded to charges of social and spatial divisions in its urban fabric by changing its Constitution. The framework for this legal-urban order can be seen in the 1988 Federal Constitution and Law No. 10.257 of 2001, known as the City Statute.

This publication is a collection of essays analysing the above law. The Cities Alliance partnered with Brazil’s Ministry of Cities to produce this unique legal instrument that seeks to overcome urban inequality. The contents describe the political, social and economic background against which the legislation was formulated and is now being implemented.

The City Statute is available in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
