Previous Cities Alliance Joint Work Programmes

In addition to its active programmes, the Cities Alliance has convened a Joint Work Programme on cities and the global agendas.

Cities and the Global Agendas

The Cities Alliance in 2014 established its first-ever Joint Work Programme focused on advocacy to create and deliver a common set of priority messages to inform and influence the Post 2015 Agenda in preparation for Habitat III.

The JWP participated in global negotiations as a coherent, dedicated group with a strong voice in support of the important role cities play in sustainable development. It supported the successful global advocacy movement to include SDG11 in the 2030 Agenda and to recognise the importance of the local level in Agenda.

Members agreed to build on the unique platform the JWP had created and undertake a second phase as cities, regions and countries turn to the implementation of the global agendas. From 2017-18, Phase II of the JWP explored the urban dimension of the different global agreements, especially the 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda. It focused on an integrated implementation and follow-up and review for these agendas, both in and with cities and through multi-stakeholder partnerships.
