[26 April 2018] -- Joining as the fifth member to the Cities Alliance Local Government constituency, C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group connects 96 of the world’s greatest cities to take bold climate action, leading the way towards a healthier and more sustainable future.

Representing more than 700 million citizens and one quarter of the global economy, mayors of the C40 cities are committed to delivering on the most ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement at the local level, as well as to cleaning the air we breathe. Mayors can only achieve their bold climate agendas with the support of partners.

C40 is delighted to join Cities Alliance to accelerate the climate action already underway in the world’s great cities. From support for city-level climate action planning, to bolstering scientific research and inter-city diplomacy on climate adaptation and resilience, C40 and Cities Alliance will help local leaders to deliver the sustainable, prosperous and climate safe cities of the future.

C40 and Cities Alliance

Over the past few years, C40 has been an active partner of Cities Alliance and an engaged member of the Cities Alliance Joint Work Programme (JWP) on Resilient Cities since its inception in 2015.

C40 currently manages two grants within the JWP:

--  Technical Assistance for City-Level Climate Action Planning, which develops city climate action reports that cover sustainable energy management in the context of broader climate change action plans through the application of the Climate Action for Sustainability (CURB) Tool. This grant is being implemented in Accra, Dakar, Dhaka, Quezon City, Quito and Santiago.

--  Implementing Paris and SDG#11 in Global South Cities: the case for urban resilience and adaptation to climate change, which supports cities in the Global South to adapt to climate change and build urban resilience by enhancing their climate leadership, removing barriers, and fostering global partnerships to accelerate action at local level for the benefit of all their inhabitants, particularly the most vulnerable ones.

C40 and Cities Alliance also collaborated on the groundbreaking CitiesIPCC Cities and Climate Change Science Conference, held this past March in Edmonton. Both organisations were co-chairs of the CitiesIPCC Organising Committee and worked closely together to ensure the success of the conference.
